Community Music Center Beginning Adult Piano

Aspiring pianists, this comprehensive and gradually paced course is a great introduction to the instrument. Absolute beginners are welcome as well as those who have some piano experience but are in need of a refresher course. Emphasis is on technique, reading, rhythm, theory and ear-training. Each student is provided with a keyboard and headphones to use in this hands-on class. Although students can register at any time, this class will be most beneficial for those who start in the fall and continue through the spring quarter.

Community Music Center Creative Expresson & Injury Prevention for Musicians

This group class uses Body-Mind Centering and Feldenkrais methods to facilitate creative expression. It is an inquiry into the relationship between the body and the mind through movement, guided attention and non-verbal dialogue. This work can create fertile ground for new performance material and improvisation. In the process students may find improvements in breathing, tone, coordination and technical proficiency as well as prevent and rehabilitate injuries.Students should bring their instruments if they have one and a piece of music to play or compose at the end of each class.

Community Music Center Music Therapy

CMC offers weekly, individual music therapy for students of all ages with special needs. This program is especially suitable for students with physical, emotional or developmental disabilities, and is led by an experienced Certified Music Therapist. Musical experience and life skills go hand-in-hand and music therapy offers individuals of all abilities the opportunity to experience self-empowerment through music. Students may develop musical skills and awareness as they work on physical, emotional or developmental goals.

California Summer Music Composition

Limited to a small number of composers (usually less than ten), the Composition Program carefully tailors instruction for each participant through at least eight one-hour private lessons. Each emerging composer experiences all stages of the compositional process: sketching, planning, and development of musical ideas, score and parts preparation, rehearsal, and performance.

California Summer Music Performance

The Performance Program is designed to create a rich musical experience in solo and chamber music for sixty-five string players and pianists from the US and the rest of the world, ranging in age from teenagers to young adults. There is ample time for individual practice, lessons and ensemble coachings, encouraging growth both technically and musically. Each participant is assigned to a compatible chamber music group that fosters team building skills across cultures and creates a deeper understanding of chamber music.
