Diablo Symphony and the Berkeley Choro Ensemble Play Music from Brazil

Presented by Diablo Symphony Orchestra

Sounds of Brazil by Diablo Symphony and Berkeley Choro Ensemble

The Diablo Symphony brightens Mother’s Day with a range of beautiful and energetic music, including the world premiere of a concerto for pandeiro (the Brazilian tambourine) and an uproarious twentieth-century work played with a screening of Charlie Chaplin’s film The Adventurer. Featured guests Brian Rice and The Berkeley Choro Ensemble join the orchestra in music from Brazil, including Felipe Senna’s Brazilian Choro Suite and his Concerto for Pandeiro and Orchestra with Rice as pandeiro soloist. The orchestra will also perform Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad’s “Brazilian Fanfare,” incorporating rhythms and dances from different regions and eras of her native country. The program concludes with Darius Milhaud’s “Le Bœuf sur le Toit,” an uproarious piece envisioned by the composer to be played with any of Chaplin’s films. Milhaud’s compositions were influenced by jazz and Brazilian music, and the performance of this work with the screening of Chaplin’s frenetic comedy provides a lighthearted finale to the DSO’s Diamond Jubilee season.
