Artistic director Paul Flight leads the California Bach Society in holiday music from the Americas. From the cathedrals of Lima, Cuzco, and Mexico City we present villancicos and motets by Juan de Araujo and Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, alive with rhythms and dance idioms reflecting indigenous cultures. From North America, we perform Christmas pieces by William Billings and other 18th-century New England composers, and Canadian works based on old French tunes. In addition, we will present lovely contemporary carol arrangements by Paul Flight, and a a new carol by modern composer N. Lincoln Hanks, written for the California Bach Society. The 30-voice chorus is joined by Paul Psarras, guitar; Tim DeCillis, percussion; and Yuko Tanaka, keyboard.
